Geirangerfjord - in the heart of the World Heritage Area

Geirangerfjord is known as the real jewel of the Norwegian fjords. With its characteristic S shape, high waterfalls and abandoned mountain farms, the fjord landscape is included on UNESCO’s list of World Heritage sites. Here you find unspoilt and beautiful nature and cultural experiences the whole year round!

The Art Nouveau town of Ålesund

UNESCO World Heritage Status

The Geiranger and Nærøy fjords are Norway’s only natural heritage sites featuring on the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage List. This area of great natural beauty found its place on the UNESCO list on 14th July 2005 and encompasses some of the longest, deepest, narrowest and most beautiful fjords in the world!

The Hjørundfjorden is surrounded by the mountains which are reckoned as the core area of the Sunnmøre Alps. The combination of fjords, mountains and local way of living make Hjørundfjorden and the Sunnmøre Alps to a varied and exciting destination.

National Tourist Routes

Geiranger - Trollstigen is a road through west Norwegian nature at its most powerful, with a dizzying view of sheer mountainsides, deep fjords and fertile valleys. Since the childhood of tourism, Geiranger and Trollstigen have been visited by tourists from all over the world. The travel industry has been benefitting from the fjord and the road for generations.

The bird island Runde

Facing the ocean, on the west coast of our region lies the island of Runde. The small island has no more than 150 inhabitants, but from February to August every year the nesting season takes place and more than 500.000 birds gather on the island.

Ski & winter

The meeting between mountain and fjord in the Alps of Sunnmøre and in Geiranger is equally spectacular in summer and winter. There is probably nowhere else in the world with this unique combination. The snow clad mountaintops, the sharp, clear winter air, the views and the nature experience refresh both body and soul! Explore Stranda Ski Resort, probably Scandinavien`s best powder area.

Walking & hiking

The combination of fjords, mountains and the ocean is unique for this part of the world. You can climb all over Sunnmøre and within all levels of challenge!

Fishing & hunting

Getting a fish on the hook is an exciting experience no matter age! In Norway, fishing in the sea and fjords is free. In rivers and waters you will need a fishing permit, which can be locally purchased. Fishing for salmon, sea trout or char requires a state fishing licence, on sale at all post offices.

Arts & Culture

In Geiranger, Ålesund and the Sunnmøre region you will find a wide offer within arts, culture and entertainment. If you are interested in arts and handicrafts, this part of the country has a rich story to tell, special techniques and fascinating expressions in a blend of everyday life, history and legends.

The fishing village and the lighthouse at Alnes

Only a 15 minutes' drive from Ålesund and 10 minutes from the Ålesund airport Vigra lies Alnes, a charming fishing village with a panoramic view of the ocean. Here you can walk in beautiful and varied terrain in the mountains or along the shoreline and experience the picturesque Alnes lighthouse.
