The bird island Runde

The unique bird life

Out in the rough sea in Herøy municipality you can visit the famous bird island Runde. The little island has only got 150 regular inhabitants, but from February to August every year, more than 500.000 birds come to Runde for the nesting season. Around 80 species have been proved nesting here, and more than 230 species have been observed in total. Runde is the essence of a bird mountain.

The gold and silver treasure from Akerendam

The trade ship Akerendam from the Netherlands was shipwrecked during its maiden voyage outside Runde in 1725. In 1975, three sports divers find the remains of the ship and what is now mentioned as the Runde treasure - one of the world's largest discoveries of coins: nearly 57 000 gold and silver coins.

How to get to Runde?

Runde is an island in the community of Herøy situated towards the sea at the west coast of Sunnmøre. The island is connected to the mainland with a bridge which is free of charge to cross. You can get to Runde all year by public transport, by car or by boat.

Where can you stay?

The best way to experience Runde is to spend the night there. The shifting weather and the light during an entire day and night makes Runde a place that deserves time. The bird- and animal life is also affected by these shifts, and a longer stay will give you a better experience from the trip.
