Facing the Atlantic ocean lie picturesque small islands and fishing communities on a string. Only a 15 minutes' drive from Ålesund and 10 minutes from the Ålesund Airport Vigra lies Alnes.
The islands of Giske are often mentioned as the saga islands. Here you will find the marble church of Giske as well as other historical buildings, graves and monuments - all telling the story of settlements on the islands for more than 8000 years.
From the fishing village of Alnes, you can enjoy the free view of the ocean, and the area has a beautiful terrain of mountains and sands. There is an excellent pebble beach just beside the lighthouse, and swimming or surfing are popular activities.
On the saga island of Giske lies the beautiful Giske Church, which was built in marble around the middle of the 12th century. The church was originally built as a private chapel for a powerful aristocratic family.
Godøy lies facing the ocean and offers excellent hiking possibilities both for children and adults on the Godøy mountain. You can reach the top from the southern as well as from the northern side of the island, and during summer you can combine it with a trip to the Alnes Lighthouse or the Godøy coastal museum.
The Summer Party at Staursneset on the island Giske gathers children and grown-ups to an open air concert with different artists - you will remember this! The arrangement is free and open for everybody - bring some food and share with others - welcome!
On Valderøy in Giske lies the cave Skjonghelleren up in the mountainside. You can walk and crawl into the 100 metres deep tunnel, and study where people lived back in the Stone Age. Traces of wildlife dating 30.000 years back have also been found.
