Fishing

Getting a fish on the hook is an exciting experience no matter age! In Norway, fishing in the sea and fjords is free. In rivers and waters you will need a fishing permit, which can be locally purchased. Fishing for salmon, sea trout or char requires a state fishing licence, on sale at all post offices.

Fishing
Fish have been central to survival, economic life and settlement in Sunnmøre for thousands of years. From that day to this people have earned their livelihoods from fishing. The fishing banks are just off the coast and the fjords are rich with fish and shellfish. Salmon migrate from the sea and up the many rivers in the area.

The mountain waters are full of silvery fish as well. The good, clean raw materials from the sea, the fjords, the rivers and the lakes have made the area world-famous. You can be a part of this adventure! With fishing rod, otter board, line, net and other fishing equipment the ground is prepared for even better nature and food experiences whilst you are on holiday. Few things taste better than fresh fish you yourself have caught in the sea, fjord, river or lake.

Fish in the sea and in the fjords is free for all. Special rules and charges apply for equipment, for example nets and pots, and for all fishing in rivers and lakes. With the opportunities provided by nature in this area, you have every chance to take part in fishing at short notice, whether you do this on your own or take part in organised tours with experienced skippers and fishermen. Skitt fiske! (Literally ‘rotten fishing’, which tells us that in Sunnmøre it is really, really bad luck to wish anyone good luck when they go fishing!)

Hunting
As with fishing, hunting has been an important means of earning a living for Sunnmøre folk throughout the ages. Nowadays it is an important aspect of outdoor life for many. You can also take part in this if you visit Sunnmøre. The variety of species provides varied opportunities for hunting both large and small game. Red deer, reindeer, roe deer, grouse and hare are the main game during the hunting season in autumn and winter.

Learn the rules for hunting in Norway – they cover the age of the hunter, course and test requirements, charges, the timing of the seasons and local conditions. If you do not want to go out on your own, you can take part in organised hunting trips with trained instructors and organisers. You can also go along even if you do not hunt yourself; the fellowship around the campfire, standing watch on lookout for the largest red deer and perhaps a meal later when the game is on the table. All are unforgettable experiences.
