Hareid municipality is situated in Southern Sunnmøre, and has a lot to offer in industry, service and leisure time activities. Hareid makes up half of the large island Hareidlandet, the other part belongs to Ulstein municipality. There are about 4.700 inhabitants in Hareid, and they are spread out across the four villages Hjørungavåg, Bigset, Hareid and Brandal.
Hareid offers many magnificent places to visit, and is well suited for outdoor activities and recreation throughout the year. The majestic mountains in Hareid are worth a visit, and everywhere in the municipality there are well-marked tracks for hiking.
The village Brandal was earlier a centre for the Norwegian sealing industry, and judging by population alone, the largest one in the world. Today you can visit The Polar Museum Aarvak in Brandal, which is Norway's largest and southernmost polar museum. Enjoy the fascinating collection of Arctic animals and birds, equipment and over 2,000 photos. Outside you can explore the ship Aarvak, used for seal hunting.
In 986 A.D, a decisive battle was fought at Hjørungavåg in Hareid. Håkon and Eirik Earl's victory over the Joms Vikings was an important part in the process of gathering all of Norway into one kingdom. By Overåsanden you can see the National Monument of the battle.
