Volda is a fjord municipality, situated in the inner parts of Sunnmøre. The municipality is renowned as an oasis for education and beautiful nature, and has got about 8.700 inhabitants. Volda College attracts more than 2,000 students from near and far every year, and offers a great variety of courses and professions. The students are responsible for the music festival "Veka" every year, as well as the annual Norwegian Documentary Film Festival and the Church music week.
In Volda there are an infinite number of beautiful places to visit, and Dalsfjorden and Austefjorden aren't just fantastic places to fish, they are also great starting points for mountain hikes, bicycle rides and walks along old forest paths. Bjørkedalen is famous for its shipbuilding traditions, and if you visit nowadays you can take part in a remarkable sightseeing trip on a Viking ship on the idyllic Bjørkedalen Water.
Volda has got an active and bustling cultural life, with more than 300 organisations and clubs of various kinds. The municipality has been ranked as the third best cultural municipality in all of Norway.
Every year "Dei Nynorske Festspela"; the festival celebrating the Norwegian written language Nynorsk, is held in Volda, at the exciting museum Ivar Aasen-tunet. Some of the other interesting things to see in Volda include the museums "Volda Bygdetun" and "Garverimuseet", and the beautiful walk along "The Old Post Road" from the 16th century.
